GOLDEN WEDDING
MR AND MRS J. E. CARTER Mr and Mrs J. E. Carter, Grey street, Ashburton, celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding yesterday. They went to Ashjburton 23 years ago Irom Leeston, where Mr Carter was the stationmaster. He was chief clerk at the Ashburton railway station for four years before retiring. Mr Carter was secretary of the Ashburton Golf Club for many years, and was also secretary of the Ashburton Croquet Club for 15 years. Mrs Carter has been a member of the Ashburton Croquet Club for about 20 years, and is an original member of the Ashburton Cavendish Club. Mr and Mrs Carter were entertained by members of the Ashburton Croquet Club on Saturday, when they were each presented with a pair of slippers by the president (Mrs F. J. E. Smallbone). A wedding, cake in their honour was made by Mrs J. F. Cleary and decorated by Miss M. McDowell.

PATRIOTIC GUILD
The Ealing Women’s Patriotic Guild met in the library hall, the president, Mrs Giddings, presiding. She reported on the meeting of the Red Cross subcentre held in Ashburton, and letters from a prisoner of war in Italy were read. Because of the lack of wool for knitting comforts for prisoners of war, it was agreed that a cash donation be made to the next-of-kin every quarter. An invitation to the Llsmore Red Cross garden party was received. Arrangements were made for the sending of a Christmas parcel to each of the local soldiers serving overseas. Donations of socks and coupons for the purchase of socks for these parcels were handed in. Eight pairs of mittens were given to the Women’s Institute. Parcels were packed at the end of the meeting. Cakes and biscuits were handed in for military hospitals. Articles knitted during the month included:—Two pairs of socks, one pair of mittens, a long-sleeved pullover, a balaclava a baby’s frock, a fair of bootees, ana a bonnet.
GROUP TRAVEL ASSOCIATION LECTURES
A variation; of. the activities of the •Group Travel Association will be provided In the South Island soon, when Mrs A. H. Gillingham, of Falrlle, who formerly organised country women’s group travel parties, begins a tour giving lectures on food problems, physical, fitness, and similar subjects related to war work. The service will be similar to that provided by the British Ministry of Information through the Women’s Rural Institutes. The new service has the approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry). Another service initiated by the association is the organisation of holidays for workers in essential industries, A ready response has been found and many employers have subsidised the scheme, which enables war workers to visit popular resorts at reduced charges. The scope of the scheme has been restricted to centres reached by rail travel.

The engagement is announced of Second-Lieutenant Ernest James (Boy), 2nd N.Z.E.F., only son of Mr and Mrs D. Marshall, Opawa road, Christchurch. to Phyllis Morrison, only daughter of Mr and Mrs H, J. Tolley, Wellington.
