OCCUPATION OF MADAGASCAR
VICHY GOVERNOR’S HEADQUARTERS
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 26. The Paris radio announces that M. Annet, Vichy Governor of Madagascar, has established new headquarters at Fort Dauphin, on the east coast of Madagascar, near the islands at the southern extremity of the territory. The radio adds that M. Annet has not given in, and that orders for resistance will now be issued from Fort Dauphin. The following communique has been issued by the British Commander in East Africa (Lieutenant-General Sir William Platt): “Since the occupation of Antananarivo one of our columns has moved east out of the capital to make contact with our troops advancing from Brickaville, whose leading elements yesterday reached Moramanga.” „ , ... , The French troops still under Vichy orders are reported generally to have retired to the southern part of the island. They are at various points on the coast or in the hills. The British troops in Madagascar are mainly from South Africa and East Africa, with a considerable body of soldiers from the United Kingdom.
