A donation of £IOOO to the All Purposes Patriotic Appeal has been approved by the Arawa District Trust Board. The amount is to be paid direct to the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, chairman of the National Patriotic Fund Board, on behalf of the Arawa confederation of tribes, and is to be credited to the quota of the Rotorua zone of the appeal. It was proposed that the amount should not be paid until the opening of the two centennial memorials of Tamate Katua at Ohinemutu and a smaller meetinghouse at Te Awahou, planned for early in December. Finally, however, it was decided that, because of the lag in the drive for the Rotorua district, the donation should be made at once so as to assist the various organisations in raising the quota of £9OOO. As a result of the calls of the armed forces on doctors there is a growing tendency for women to be employed as house surgeons in hospitals, said the medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital (Dr. J. Cairney) recently. At present the three junior registrars (doctors who have completed two years as house surgeons) are all women, whereas early last year they were all men. The two senior house surgeons are both women, and one of the 10 first-year house surgeons is a woman. Twenty-three house . surgeons have heen appointed for next year, though all Will not be available, and of these ?® v en are women. Dr. Cairney said it had always been the policy of the Wellington Hospital to appoint house on ability, irrespective of sex.
