FALL OF SNOW IN SOUTHLAND
WEATHER QUICKLY CLEARS (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 25. An unexpected fall of snow occurred in most parts of Southland this morning, but except in the high country it cleared quickly and disappeared during the afternoon. Although it is late in the year for snow to fall, it is not likely to cause much damage to crops or stock or delay more than slightly the progress of urgent farm work. After several days of broken conditions the weather changed for the worse on Thursday night and there was already a white coating over Invercargill at daylight this morning. Up to an inch of snow fell in the city, but it melted rapidly in the afternoon. In the country districts conditions were similar to those in the city. The heaviest snowfall was in the coastal belt. Conditions were not sufficiently bad to cause any serious mortality among lambs.
