PROSPECTS FOR TO DAY
The Geraldine Racing Club should have a most successful spring fixture on the Orari racecourse to-day. Practically all of the South Island racing centres will be represented on the card, and investors will be confronted with some difficult problems. The Geraldine Cup has attracted an excellent field of proved middle-distance horses, including Royal Lancer, who will be making a reappearance after an absence since he won the Easter Handicap at Riverton in April. The Squatters’ Handicap will also be contested by a good class field, including Scottish Dale, who has not appeared since May. There are a few horses with dual engagements, one of these being Stabilise, who is in noth open events, and will be well supported in whichever race is selected for him. The three hack events have filled well, and those carded for the hurdle race should provide a spectacular contest.
The win-and-place system will be In use, and the following horses can be expected to race prominently:— First Hurdles: Adina, Donadea, Rockery. Squatters’ Handicap: Stabilise and Hincpo. New Zealand Cup Candidate Royal Lancer at his best would bf capable of winning the Geraldine Cup. After scoring a clear-cut victory in the Easter Handicap at Riverton with 9-3. he was the prospective favourite for the Timafu Cup with 9-9. but fell lame on the eve of the race. It is, however, unlikely that he will be at his top, as he has not had a run in public since he had to be spelled It is intended to prepare him for the New Zealand Cup. and the long trip from Ihvcrcargill has been made in view of the need of giving him all the racing possible. Well Performed Dam Southern Sail, who is to contest the Geraldine Cup. is a daughter of Set Sail, who twice won the race for Dr. Rogers, of Gore. Southern Sail commenced last season bv winning the Wyndham Cup and the Southland Handicap, and after a third placing at Gore She won the Dunedin Cup. She failed in four subsequent races in the south, but is good when she strikes one of her purple patches Last season she was trained by F. Voight, Set Sail's rider, but at present she is m E. J. Ellis’s stable.
TROTTING NOTES
New Brighton Nominations Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s spring meeting to be held at Addington on October 10 will close at 5 p.m. next Tuesday. ~ 6 Bracketed , At the Geraldine meeting the following horses will be bracketed on the totalisator. Geraldine Trot: Bonny Axworth and Lady Bligh Coral Glow and Night Porter, Easedown’and Pocketbook. Orari Trot: Courtcard and Hoyden, Cheval d’Or and Lockheed. Communique and Sir Gaillard, Helen Lewis and Turret, Bay Acron and Technique, and Southern Way and Star Performer Safety Number The safety number for harness races at the mile and a quarter post on the Geraldine racecourse is 18 horses, and with the extra three allowed under the rules there will be no need for a division in to-day’s race. Small Stakes At a recent meeting at Ascot, Victoria’s trotting course, the principal stake was £75 Two other races, to be run in divisions, were worth only £55 and £GO in the aggregate. In the country owners are asked to race for stakes as low as £lO With so many necessary restrictions trotting clubs in Australia are having a hard task to carry on. A Clash The alteration of the date of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton to November 88 and December 5 will now
cause the cup day to clash with the Forbury Park's spring meeting, and, the Southland Racing Club’s fixture being on November 2i, the first free date the club could obtain would be December 12. After a round-the-table discussion, in which it was aerced that December 12 would be too near Christmas it was decided that it would be better to clash with the New Zealand Cup meeting than the Southland fixture, as the latter club’s programme would be sure to include light-harness races, and to adhere to the date granted, November 28. ...
