EGG MARKETING
Sir,—The article on the Marketing Department’s elaborate scheme for the sale of eggs makes good reading and will no doubt spur many farmers to concentrate on their neglected poultry yards: but may I point out that, at the present time, the facilities in the way of empty crates, in Canterbury at far from adequate even partly to fulfil the needs of existing suppliers? As a producer of many years standing I find that since the poultry firms’ amalgamation it is almost impossible to obtain an adequate supply of empty crates to forward any eggs. I know that the Central Egg Board’s probable reply will be that the dearth of crates is caused by the war situation. I may point out that prior to the merger I had no trouble in obtaining a regular supply of crates: and this applies to the whole of the Geraldine district. — Yours, etc., PRODUCER. Geraldine, September 23, 1942. f’The crate position is being rectified now,” said Mr C. Ferguson, chairman of directors of the Central Egg Floor. Ltd., to whom the letter was referred. “Unfortunately, the only machine in New Zealand for locking the fillers broke down three weeks ago. delaying the execution of orders for fillers. In addition, hundreds of crates each week have gone right out of the country.”]
