The programme committee of the Auckland Trotting Club has announced an increase in the prize money for the spring meeting at Epsom on October 24 and 26. The sum of £5300 will be distributed, and practically all classes will benefit. The thief events are:—First day; Jellicoe Handicap, of £6OO, 3min ZSsec class; Electric Handicap, of £350, 2min 49sec class: Stewards' Handicap, of £350, 4mln 42sec class; Mountain Handicap, of £3OO, 3min 41sec class. Successful Trainers The Ashhurst trainer J. A. Gerrard took a big share of the prize money at the recent meeting at Wellington. At the patriotic fixture he won with Lady Tornado and Steel King, and took a second with Wee Pandora. Then on Saturday he scored with Steel King and Wee Pandora, in addition to taking a second with Te Roto. Another country trainer, L. F. Berkett, of Richmond, won two races, a second, and two thirds. System of Betting Before Tuesday's meeting the Forbury Park Trotting Club went into committee to consider the totalisator question. It was decided to have the ordinary win and place system of betting, and when the chairman asked for a show of hands of those favourable to the indicator machine only a minority of those present appeared to be in favour of it. Four Killed in Fire.— Four bodies were discovered in the debris after Are destroyed the two main dormitory sections of the Salvation Army Home for aged men near' Brisbane last night.
