Straight Left gave a good impression by winning over nine furlongs at Marton last Saturday. He was one of the last of a big field going out of the straight, and was still* a long way back turning for home. He then had to run round the field, and, in spite of strong challenges, won well. He is a four-year-old gelding by Winning Hit from Competition by Polazel from Rivalry, dam of Knock Out (dam of First Round), Rival' Hit, and Winning Rival. He is owned by Mr S, J. Newland, and is trained at Trentham by P. Reardon. Probable Retirement

Old Bill broke down so badly at Marton on Saturday that it seems highly probable that tlie racing career of this good horse has ended. Old Bill, who is seven years old, had been galloping really well at Awapuni, and might have won a good race this spring had he avoided his latest misfortune. Juveniles at Marton

Screen, winner of the Wanganui Debutant Stakes, is owned by her breeder, Mr G. M. Currie, who won the race last, year with Damask and has a fine record In this event. A 1 Jolson, Mldinette, Variable, Variant, and Legatee are others Of Motley’s family. Spiral is by Limond from Drax, a Spearmint mare. She began well and the race never seemed to be in serious doubt. Sea Spl, owned by Mrs L. M. Lamb and trained at Awapuni by J. J. Waller, was a fair second and was well clear of the third horse, Xelte-he, who arrived at the winning post Just in time to nose Royal Heir out of third place. TROTTING NOTES

Change of Ownership smirke, * flve-ycar-oid bay gelding by Hey de Oro—Virginia, who showed such promising form when he won the Trial Handicap at Ashburton on June 1, was recently sold by Mr J. Grice to thGWel** lington sportsmen, Messrs D. G. Fraser and J. Shelley, and he raced in their interests at Trentham on Saturday. His new owners were perhaps unlucky in not receiving an early return on their outlay, for Smirke broke a short distance from the post when he seemed to have a good chance. Smirke has been such a consistent pacer that his mistake is hard to explain. He Is still a prospect, however, in several events that he will race in during the next few months. Smirke Is a good stayer and his 4min 38 i-ssec for two miles at Ashburton represented a good effort. At Geraldine

In the Orarl Handicap, of one mile and a quarter, to be run at the Geraldine Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. 19 horses have been set to start from the limit mark. The safety number lor this starting post is 12. and, allowing for the three extra that are allowed to start, there will have to be several scratchings to Obviate the necessity of running the race in division*. Sandstone

Sandstone gave his backers at Ashburton on Saturday a poor run for the r money, for with little more than half the journey covered he was pulled up. A change Of gear to which ho was not, accustomed is said to be the cause of the erratic display, but Sandstone will be given a Chance to atone in the Orari Handicap at Geraldine. A big number starting from the front mark will not make his chance the easier, but with a fair run he has enough speed to beat the majority. His most formidable opposition may be provided by Helen Lewis and Sandiways. Thfee-ycar-olds Captain Morant’s win in the Wellington Stakes has made him a firm favourite for the New Zealand Derby, to be run in November, but the good showing made by Tam o’ Shanter after his enforced spell leaves a hope that he may fully extend the Key de Oro gelding. In the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, run at Ashburton on June 1, Captain Morant was fully extended to beat the Quite Sure filly Karnak, and another meeting between the pair will be awaited with Interest. Hilda Potts, who, like Karnak, is Aucklandtrained, has not had the opportunity it meeting the crack pacers of her age. At her best she is a really good pacer. ,
