EDUCATION BOARD

TIMARU MEMBER ELECTED Results of the Canterbury Education Board’s election of a member for the Timaru urban area, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr W. J. Preen, were announced yesterday. The successful candidate was Mr A. E. Lawrence, who polled 24 votes. His opponent, Mr H. S. Low, secured nine votes. Mr Lawrence, who was formerly editor of the “Timaru Herald,” was at one time a member of the Otago Education Board, and of the Waitaki High Schools’ Board. He was associated with the Primary Schools’ Syllabus Revision Commission, and is a life member of the School Committees’ Association.
