RAILWAY LINE TO KAIKOURA

WORK TO CONTINUE

Speaking at a meeting at Kaikoura this week, Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P. for Marlborough, said that he had been in communication with the Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) about the completion of the railway line from Blenheim to Kaikoura. As the result of a visit paid by the Minister, it was decided to proceed with the work' and endeavour to have the line completed to Clarence Bridge within a month. An inventory had been taken of material on hand, and provided shipping transport was available, the portion of the line from Clarence south would be pushed forward. The Minister had taken up the matter with enthusiasm with a view to conserving petrol and tyres, said Mr Meachen. The section of line between Clarence Bridge and Kaikoura would be fully staffed, and the work vigorously proceeded with, said Mr Meachen. The work would occupy about five months. There were enough rails and material to complete the section of the line from Kaikoura to Hundalee, and when manpower and plant were available the southern end of the line could be completed, said Mr Meachen. This work, he said, would probably occupy 12 months.
