Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, left Wellington yesterday for a visit to Christchurch and Dunedin. He will return to Wellington on October 3. (P.A.) Mr A. E. Mabin was re-elected president and Mr D. Allan, vice-president of the New Zealand Association by the annual meeting at Wellington yesterday—(P.A.) Dr. T. Maling, assistant medical superintendent of the Christchurch Public Hospital, who has accepted an appointment at Pukeora Sanatorium, has resigned from the staff of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Appreciation of his seryices was expressed at a meeting of the board yesterday. Dr. L. A. MacDougall was appointed assistant medical superintendent, subject to the approval of the Director-General of Health. Advice has been received in Wellington that the Most Rev, Justin Daniel Simonds, D.D., Ph.D., Archbishop of Hobart, has been appointed Coadjutor to the Most Rev. D. Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne, who is now in his seventy-eighth year. Archbishop Simonds was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Manly, N.S.W., and after his ordination was a professor at St. Columba’s College, Springwood, He went to Louvain University in 1932, wh&re he obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy, and oh his return to Australia became rector of St. Columba’s College. He was elected Archbishop of Hobart in succession to Archbishop Hayden, who died in October, 1936. Dr. Simonds was consecrated in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, on May 6, 1937, by his Excellency the Most Rev. J. Panico, S.T.D., Apostolic Delegate. Dr. Mannix was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Melbourne in October, 1912, and became Archbishop in May, 1917.
