SPORTING

TURF GOSSIP Track Work at Riccarton Because most of tile horses accepted tor at the Geraldine Racing Club's spring meeting on Saturday were raced at Ashburton last week, serious galloping at niccarton yesterday was restricted. The , . j J. 1 Brass track was open, and it provided fast going, , Lord Advocate and Miss Saone recorded imin Id l-ssec for six furlongs, the second three in 37 3-Ssec. The latter has come to hand satisfactorily after her spell, and should show up at Orari.

Promising Juvenile Erambie, with the two-year-old Islam as_a mate, sprinted three furlongs in 3(1 2-dscc. Tlic latter continues to make good progress, in view of a trip to Wingatui for the McLean Stakes next month. Over Five Furlongs Stabilise and Sham Boy were abreast clear of Hinepo at the end of five furlongs in linin 2sec, the last three in 37 o-osec.

St. Cloud and Scottish Dale ran live same distance in Imin 2 2-ssec, the last three in 38sec.

Warrigal ran hall a mile in 49 3-ssec, the last three in 36 3-ssec. Good Scout and Last Effort finished together in front of Nightglass after covering six furlongs in Imin 16 l-osec, the last three in 39sec.

Lady Midian and Recompense went over the same ground in Imin 17sec, the last three in 39 3-ssec.

Dispense beat Kilcato over a mile in Imin 46 2-ssec, the first half in 53sec.

On the Plough Willow Wood and Junior ran six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec. The former was to have been sent to Ellerslie last week, but transport was not available. Dunedin Guineas

Warrigal and King Herod were not entered for the Dunedin Guineas, and their absence will considerably weaken the field for next month's classic. John Gay is booked for the trip, and his strongest opponent will now be Botany, who has not appeared since his success at Riccarton last month. Botany is to be ridden by A. E. Didham, who had the mount on Warrigal at Ashburton. Botany’s breederowner, Mr D, Grant, is also represented in the list by Pallid, a chestnut gelding by Man's Pal from Pink Link, a sister to Kinnoull, but who is likely to go south for the Novice Handicap at the meeting. Pallid attracted notice by his impressive effort at Ashburton. He acted as pacemaker during the middle stages- of the Novice Stakes, and finished a close third to Tutere and Eulogia. This was Pallid’s first appearance in public. Wanganui Guineas The Wanganui Guineas race was notable for the decisive defeat of the two Aucklanders, Representative and Beau Vaals, who could finish only fourth and fifth respectively, the time being the slowest on record. Both had every chance, as they drew 3 and 2 at the post, and were lying just in behind the leader, Starlet, throughout, and they led into the straight with Voltaire. Beau Vaals momentarily flattered on the inner, but it was only a brief dab, and both tired quickly. The race was a triumph for Indian Sign and his rider, Broughton. Drawing 12, Indian Sign was not bustled early, and was well back in the first half He began to improve his position from the five furlongs, and was within striking distance at the three. When he made his final bid he drew clear, and held on well against a strong challenge by Hippodrome, who. ridden by A. E. Ellis, ran very wide most ot the way, specially round the turn Into the straight. Voltaire, always one of the leaders, was a close third, with Representative fourth, then Beau Vaals, War Effort, and Theolateral. There is no doubt that the going was responsible for Representative’s moderate showing but he stayed on On the other hand. Beau Vaals weakened. Indian Sign was purchased in July by Mr P Curtis, ot Christchurch, tor 4do guineas, and remained in T. R. Georges stable. Ohincmurl J.C.

Transport difficulties have caused the Ohlnemuri Jockey Club to apply to the authorities for the postponement, until October-3, of its spring meeting, • which was fixed for September 26, It is hoped that permission for the postponement will be granted, and that the matter will be completed by to-day at the latest. In the meantime, arrangements are being made for the meeting to be held on October 3,—(P.A.)
