HUNDALEE TRAIN

Sir,—l would like to draw attention to the many times this train is an hour or thereabouts late in arriving at Hundalee. Surely this state of affairs does not exist on other trunk lines. Even in war time this can hardly be excused. * I would also like to mention the total inadequacy of the Waipara station tearooms. It is almost impossible for women or children to get in to secure refreshments in the time allowed there. 'I suggest that larger tea-rooms be erected at the northern end. away from vans and near carriages. This will surely be needed when the line is completed to Blenheim, and not be merely a war-time necessity.—Yours, ptc TRAVELLER.

September 15, 1942. [Mr G. H. McLean, district traffic manager in the Railways Department, says “Only on one occasion during the last six weeks has this train arrived one hour late at Hundalee. Any delays are due to heavy work en route and to the fact that in its efforts to maintain plant at pre-war standards the department is experiencing difficulty in obtaining supplies, etc. The erection of refreshment rooms at the northern end of the Waipara station has been authorised, and the work will be commenced as soon as tradesmen are available.’’]
