OBITUARY

THE HON. J. GOODALL

The Hon. J. Goodall, M.L.C., aged 80, a native of Nelson, died at Greymouth last evening. He was a stalwart of the Labour movement over a period of 50 years and was elected to the Legislative Council in March, 1936. He worked for many years on the waterfront, and before 1913 was secretary of the Greymouth branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union. He was, up to the time of his death, secretary

HON. J. GOODALL, M.L.C. cf the Westland Labour Representation Committee and also secretary of the Westland Engine Drivers’ Union, and Westland Shop Assistants’ Union. He was also a member of the Westland Licensing Committee and the Greymouth Labour Paper Board, a former member of the Greymouth Technical High School, the Greymouth Borough Council (for a period of five years), and a director of the Grey River Argus Company, Ltd., for 15 years. His wife predeceased him some years ago. MR J. W. MCEWAN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 22. Mr J. W. McEwan, for 20 years Mayor of Petone,, died at Silverstream. He was 84 years of age. The importance of Petone as an industrial centre can be largely attributed to Mr McEwan’s indefatigable activities. He served on the Wellington Hospital Board for 16 years, was first chairman of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board and for many years held office op the Wellington Harbour Board, part of the time as chairman. He retired from public life about 10 years ago.
