SPORTING

TURF GOSSIP

A Classic Possibility Warrigal ran a very satisfactory race In the John Grlgg Stakes, and but for being checked a little early in the run home he would have been more troublesome at the finish. The firm track was probably not in his favour, and his turn may come In the Dunedin Guineas next month. Near at Hand Hurry Girl shaped well in open company at Ashburton, and looks a likely proposition at Orari. Will Benefit from Race Straight Bat made her reappearance at Ashburton on Saturday, and after some Impressive track work she was well supported. , She, however, was in a lather at the start, and no doubt this took a good deal out of her. but nevertheless she was in a commanding position well into the straight, only to peter out at the business end. Expensive Tea Drop must have proved to be a very expensive horse since purchased from the North Island. He has had several starts in recent months, and was thought good enough in July to send to Trentham. Tea Drop had useful performances to his credit before coming south, but has given little sign of form since. Burst of Speed The plainest and most backward-look-ing horse at Ashburton was Night Believer. a four-year-old gelding by Nightmarch from Lady Aske by Philamor from the Night Raid mare Nlghtdew. a descendant of Lady Zetland. He is privately trained at Amberley, and was having his fourth race on Saturday. He was the slowest of the field in the Penscroft Hack Handicap to leave the barrier, but at the end of half a mile he was in second place, but only for a while, as he had gone back again when the home run was entered on. The effort at least suggested that he commands a turn of speed. Totallsator Figures at Wanganui At the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday the totallsator handled £23,344, making a total of £45,961 for the meeting. English Thoroughbred Sales Remarkably high prices were realised at the Newmarket July sales, but ruling conditions are keeping New Zealand buyers inactive. The American millionaire, Marshall Field, sold his entire stud. Four of his mares, believed to be in foal, sold for 13,800 guineas. They Included Infrared, served by Nearco, 5000 guineas; Vincenzia, with a colt by Fairway, 3000 guineas, and Embuche, served by Bols Roussel. 2300 guineas. The Aga Khan, who sold most of his horses early in the war. reappeared, through agents, as a buyer, and secured Diala, served by Bols Roussel, for 4200 guineas; Eclair, served by Hyperion, for 3500 guineas; and a three-year-old unnamed filly by Fairway from Eclair, for 3500 guineas. Juveniles at Mosglel The Mosglel owner-trainer, D. P. Wilson, has a promising team of two-year-olds to commence this season with, but only two of the five are engaged in the McLean Stakes, says the Dunedin "Star." They are a bay colt by Phaleron Bay from Helen, who will carry Mr J. M. Samson’s colours, and a brown gelding by Ringmaster from Kerbside, who will race in his own livery. Helen’s colt cost Mr Samson ISOOgns at the national sales, and is a half-brother to Queen Helen and Troy, good winners in Australia, also to Tizzy and The Squire, both winners in the Dominion Helen is by Limond from Bonny Portland, by Bonlform from Helen Portland. Kerbside is by Tea Tray from Kerb, by Markhope from Fender, by Martian. a family that has given the Mosgiel Park trainer a host of good winners. Kerb was also the dam of winners in Trivet, Fireguard, and Bad News; and Kerbside, like her dam a good winner, has left Hearth, winner of 16 races and £3895 in stakes, and True Mate, another winner. The other youngsters in work are a black colt, Bridgehead, by Foxbrldge from Min Lu, by King Lu from Elnona, by Elyslan; a bay filly, First In. by Siegfried from Gobble, dam of Skyrena by Tea Tray from Fulsome, by Absurd from Eulogy, and a chestnut filly by Irish Lancer from Waving Corn, by Solferino from Rosalita, by Rokeby from Rosalia, the dam of Roseday.
