MEN RELEASED FROM ARMY
REVIEW OF FURLOUGH PRIVILEGE Representations were recently made to the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) by Mr Clyde Carr, M.P. for Timaru, concerning the furlough privilege of soldiers released from the Army. Mr Carr has received the following reply from the Minister; — "With regard to the furlough privilege of soldiers who are released from the Army on the recommendations of Armed Forces Appeal Boards, in view of your representations, and as certain other questions have arisen in connexion with furlough, it has been decided to make a careful and comprehensive review of the conditions under which it is granted. You can be assured that your representations will receive careful consideration."
Replying to another communication from Mr Carr about the supply of spectacles to members of the forces, the Minister has stated that a branch of the Army Medical Services has been constituted to deal with the visual examination of troops, and the supply of glasses. The organisation was of recent origin, said the Minister, and it would take a while'before all parts of the country were adequately served. In the meantime, priority of attention would be given to urgent cases. The Army issue of spectacles would be of a special pattern designed for use under a respirator.
