ATTACK ON ARCTIC CONVOY

GERMANS CLAIM 38 SHIPS SUNK LONDON, Sept. 20. An official German statement claims that German bombers and U-boats, in an attack beginning on September 13, sank 38 merchantmen from a British Arctic convoy going to Russia. The Luftwaffe also sank one destroyer and two escort vessels. The German High Command said that the convoy was the largest ever to attempt to force the passage to Russia. The convoy was sailing close to the pack ice south of Spitzbergen, and escorts formed several cordons round the merchantmen.

The battle raged uninterruptedly for six days. The ships sunk included six tankers and one large munitions ship which blew up. It is learned in London that the German claims are greatly exaggerated.
