Australian nurses actually engaged in obstetric duties or in child welfare work are strongly discouraged from joining the Army. The Amy had given an undertaking to refrain, as far as possible, from accepting nurses who were needed for midwifery or infant welfare work, and this,agreement had always been honoured.
