TURF GOSSIP

Bracketed There'will be only one bracket in the galloping events at Ashburton to-day— Turkish Patrol and Bramhall, in the Novice Stakes. Likes Course

As a two-year-old last season the Mr Standfast filly Alethea won the Juvenile Handicap and Junction Plate at the Marton New Year meeting. Last Saturday she started off the new term by taking the Durie Hack. Handicap at the Wanganui meeting, held on the same course. Wanganui Guineas To-day The presence of Representative, winner of the Avondale Guineas, and Beau Vaals. who scored decisively in the Flying Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday. will lend added attraction to the Wanganui Guineas at Marton to-day. Representative won at Ellerslie in striking fashion, outstaying Bonny Pay In a good finish. By Nightmarch from Praise, Representative is bred on excellent IJhes, and represents good staying families. Beau Vaals. having his first race as a three-year-old, revealed brilliance in defeating a number of older and . wellperformed sprinters. He is also bred on sound lines, being by Vaals from Limeen. Beau Vaals was a high-class two-year-old, and his prospects of extending his winning record this season are very bright. If both start. Representative and Beau Vaals may stage an interesting finish.

An interesting acceptors is Dominate, but it is doubtful whether he will start. Indian Sign, by Bulandshar from Countersign, had three wins and three seconds in his first six races last term, his chief success being the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. By running second to Moutoa Bond in the Flying Handicap at Marton last Saturday, Indian Sign drew attention to his prospects. Broiveine is a very useful filly by Broiefort from Lucky Alice, and she has the benefit of recent racing. At Hawera last month Broiveine won the-Waihi Handicap, seven furlongs, and at Marton was third to Hamish and Come True in the Putiki Handicap, nine furlongs. Boulder Dam, by Tiderace from Symballo, won the Hastings Maiden last season and was second to Coronace in the Hastings Juvenile Handicap. Dashup and Lady Spiral were placed in the Maiden Race at Marton. Others engaged, with good form as two-year-olds. are Hippodrome, Broadcaster, and Theolateral. The last-named is also an acceptor for the Spring Hack Handicap, There are 20 in the field, and should there be more than 17 starters, the distance will be extended from one mile to one mile and a half and a furlong.
