E.P.S. TRIAL. A work-out of the E.P.S. was held at Lyttelton last ‘night. Coming so soon after the alert had been advertised, the alarm surprised most residents. The siren sounded at 6.45 o’clock, when there was still an appreciable amount of daylight, and the black-out was not as complete as on former occasions, The different branches of the service operated at their respective posts, the attendances being very satisfactory. Soon after the alarm sounded, the fire brigade was called upon to deal with a petrol fire staged at one of the defence posts. It is intended to hold a daylight work-out shortly, and the period during which the alarm may be expected will be announced in due course. Te Whaka Tennis Club At the annual meeting of the Te Whaka Tennis Club the following officers were elected; —President, Mr. A K. Dyne; vice-presidents, Mrs L. Comer, Captain J. M. Scott, Dr. B. H Gilmour; captains, Mrs L. Comer and Mr J. Plimmer, secretary and treasurer, Miss C. Williams; committee, Mesdames J. Plimmer and I. Newton, Misses E. Bundy, L. Dyne, and E. Mahar, Messrs W. A. N. Shepherd and R. Marriott; social committee, Mesdames Plimmer and Newton, Misses O. Hobbs, E. Dyne, T. Sutton, and E. Mahar. Gifts were presented to two members on leave—Privates C. Stanley and A. Derbidge.
