MAYORALTY OF TIMARU
TWO CANDIDATES NOMINATED At the close of nominations for the mayoralty of Timaru, at noon yesterday, two candidates had oeen nominted for election. They were Percy Barnes Foote, nominated by 1 Messrs F. J. Rolleston and B. L. Blodorn; and Alfred Ernest Stanley Hanan, nominated by Messrs W. S. Ramsay, W. A. Warner, J. G. Duncan, and W. S. Minehan, Cr. A. S. Kinsman, who was mentioned yesterday as a possible candidate, did not allow himself to be nominated. Mr Foote was a member of the Timaru Borough Council, and chairman of the finance committee from 1927 to 1929. He did not seek re-election till 1933. He was appointed Mayor in IS3B, for a short period, but did not stand for re-election. He has been Acting-Mayor since the Mayor (Major W. G. Tweedy) left for overseas. Mr Hanan is ■ a son of the late Mr J. Hanan, and a nephew of the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., Chancellor of the University of New Zealand. His brother, Lieutenant R. Hanan, is a former Mayor of Invercargill. Mr Hanan was elected to the Timaru Borough Council in May. 1941.
