EIGHT JAPANESE SHIPS KIT BY BOMBS LONDON, Sept. 16. Heavy American bombers attacked Kiska, in the Aleutians, yesterday and sank or damaged eight Japanese ships. Shore installations were set on fire and five enemy aircraft were shot down. A communique issued by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz at Pearl Harbour says United States aeroplanes at Kiska Island on 'Tuesday sank two enemy ships They aiso shot down six enemy aeroplanes and killed 500 Japanese. The Alaskan army base has announced that American fighter aeroplanes attacked shipping and troops on Kiska Island, following an attack by bombers, , . . The Associated Press of America reports that fighter aeroplanes ma-chine-gunned a formation of Japanese troops, damaged a floatplane, and caused havoc aboard a converted yacht which was believed to be a floating command post, and silenced a machine-gun crew ashore. Three days before, bombers scored damaging near misses on a group of cargo vessels, strafed a troop column, and set fire to a large warehouse. The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times,” commenting on the American attacks at Kiska, states: "Experts point out that the presence of many Japanese submarines indicates that the Japanese are planning to use Kiska as a base to cut RussianAmerican supply lines, which explains the cost expended by the Japanese in holding an otherwise useless island.
