JAPANESE RAIDS ON INDIA

NEW DELHI, Sept. 16, It is officially announced that Japanese air raids on British India have killed 285 persons. „..,_. _ An official of the Civil Defence Department said that Japanese aeroplanes had carried out raids on British India, primarily against military targets. There had been no attacks since May. MANDALAY BOMBED BY R.A.F. WAVELL VISITS FORCES ON BURMA BORDER LONDON, Sept. 16. A New Delhi air communique says that Royal Air Force bombers °n Monday bombed targets in Mandalay. Hits were seen on buildings on the east bank of the Irrawaddy, but bad weather prevented observation of the results. Anti-aircraft fire was< encountered but all the aeroplanes returned safely. . The Commander-in-Chief, India (General Sir Archibald Wavell), paid another flying visit to the forces nearest the Japanese in Burma. Before leaving he told an agency correspondent that no effort was being spared to make the frontiers not only safe but also a menace to the Japanese. .: Correspondents say that British patrols are bringing back valuable information. Contacts with the enemy are rare but the Japanese garrison at Akyab has had proof of British activity.
