DATE OF NEXT BALLOT

NO DECISION MADE EXAMINATION OP 35-37 GROUPS A draft of 80 men will be the first of the reservists whose names appeared in Wednesday’s call-up for the military forces to be examined by a medical board in Christchurch on Saturday. Arrangements have been made for medical boards to sit daily, except Sundays, to examine reservists, who numbered 3355 in the Christchurch military district. The examinations will continue until October 17, by which date the authorities are hopeful that all reservists will have been examined. Men who are passed fit for military service will be placed in what the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates (Minister of Armed Forces and War Co-ordination) has described as “a pool of manpower which can be called upon as required from time to time, whether for the armed forces or for industry.” No instructions regarding the posting of men called this week to military units have been issued. Interviewed by “The Press” last night, the Minister of National Service (the Hon. W. J. Brosdfoot) said that no decision had yet been made as to the calling-up of the next age group. It was unlikely, he said, that the next ballot would appear until all the men called this week had been medically graded and many of the appeals heard by the boards.
