PLUNKET SOCIETY

Sir,—“ The Press" deserves censure for its unsporting attitude in publishing so prominently an attack on the Plunket Society on the morning of Violet Day, the only day on which the society publicly ap l ' .als for funds. The attack is based on the opinion of people whose own country is backward in infant welfare, and a concerted effort was being made two years ago to reduce high infant mortality and the incidence of rickets. The writer has had recent opportunity of visiting babies’ welcome centres in England, where the work compares most unfavourably with that of the Plunket Society.—Yours, etc., DOROTHY M. HOLLAND. September 16, 1942. ANGLO-RUSSIAN RELATIONS Sir,—ln a recent outburst against Mr Churchill, Mr Aneurin Bevan reflected a most regrettable trend in public opinion throughout the Empire to extol Russia and Russian leaders at the expense of Britain, The British people, he said, had more confidence in the military sagacity of Marshals Voroshilov and Timoshenko than in Mr Churchill. To those of Mr Sevan’s opinions—and there are not a few—three suggestions may be interesting. First, Russian generalship in the first year, Timoshenko and Zhukov excepted, was consistently bad; Budenny in the south and Voroshilov in the north making particularly disastrous mistakes. Second, Russian agitation for the second front has been selfish and uncompromising. Finally, reading between the lines of Churchill’s speech, the Russians’ reticence about their military and internal position has con-, stantly embarrassed our relations with them.—Yours, etc., OBSERVER.
