TUBERCULOSIS HOSPITAL

DEPUTATION TO MEET I e MINISTER " Advice was received at a meeting of the South Canterbury Hospital Board of the consent of the Minister of Health (the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer) to the spending of £7500 by the board, on a new tuberculosis hospital in Otipua road, Timaru. Correspondence was also received from the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, indicating that an emphatic protest against the building of the tuberculosis hospital had , been lodged with the Minister Of Health and the Director of' Town Planning. It was decided that Dr. J. C. McKenzie (Medical Superintendent, Timaru Hospital), and Mr H. G. Naylor (secretary of the hospital board) should attend the meeting next Saturday, when a deputation will meet the Minister of Health to discuss matters concerning the new hospital. The chairman (Mr E. Macdonald) said that a lot of unwarranted criticism had been levelled at the board . for proceeding with the erection of the new hospital. The board’s decision to do so had not been made hurriedly, as the proposal had been talked about for more than 10 year:. “Cr. A. E. S. Hanan, of the Timaru Borough Council, said recently he had inspected the ‘dungeon’ at the hospital, in which tubercular patients were cared for,” said Mr Macdonald; 3 “that is utter nonsense. To describe ! the building as a ‘dungeon’ is the height of absurdity.”
