AUSTRALIAN EPIDEMIC OVER (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 15. Australia’s epidemic of cerebrospinal meningitis is over. The Commonwealth Director-General of Health (Dr. J. H. Cumpston) believes that it followed precisely the same course as the epidemic of the first war; but superior modern knowledge in the use of sulphanilamide lowered the deathrate from one-half in 1916 to about 15 per cent. Tobruk Losses Made Good. —The Prime Minister of South Africa (General Smuts), speaking at Pretoria, said that the South African losses at Tobruk had been more than made good by most satisfactory recruiting.—London.
