REHABILITATION OF SOLDIERS
PROPOSALS TO FARMERS’ UNION The rehabilitation of returning from the present war will be discussed at a meeting of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union at Timaru on Friday. Mr A. J. Davey, who is a past-presi-dent of the executive, has drawn up a comprehensive rehabilitation plan, which has been submitted to branches of the Farmers’ Union in South Canterbury. Mr Davey’s suggestions are as follows:—(a) that no land should be purchased and financed by the Government without the approval of a joint district committee equally representative of the Returned Services’ Association and the Farmers’ Union; (b) that the price paid for settlement land should be based on the production capacity over a period of years: (ci that no man should be placed on an uneconomic holding: (d) that any material change in price of major products, in wages, and in maintenance rates should be justification for a review of the rent paid; (e) that any rent adjustment should apply to all holdings in the same category; (f) that in the event of transfer, vendors should be entitled to the visible and proved invisible improvements only; (g) that the best possible access be provided by the State to all settlements before occupation; and (hj) that all returned servicemen with no practical farming experience, who are desirous of taking over land, should be subject to a term of Monck's Bay Wall.—The Tramway Board yesterday agreed to contribute £2OO toward? fh- cost of the proposed sea wall to protect the roadway at Monck’s Bay from damage by high tides. The estimated cost of the wall which would be three feet above the level of the tramline, is £6OO.
