Avoiding Divisions To avoid divisions, the Wellington Racing Club’s spring programme advises, and emphasises, that it will reduce to within the safety number any field by sectional ballot. All persons nominating and accepting will be deemed to have accepted this condition. Owners of horses eliminated will be advised by telegram forthwith, after the closing time of acceptances. No nomination or acceptance fees will be payable for any horse in respect of the race from which it has been eliminated by ballot, provided that such horse accepts for only one race on the same day of the meeting, but in all other cases the full amount of nomination and acceptance fees will be payable whether such horse has been eliminated by ballot, Programme at Trentham The programme has been drawn up by the Wellington Racing Club for its spring meeting on October 24 and 28. Twelve months ago the club presented two £IOOO steeplechase races as compensation for the abandonment of the winter fixture, and their absence on this occasion necessitates certain adjustments being made. Further, instead of the usual three-day meeting, it will extend to two days only. The races on the first day largely correspond with last year’s, the defection of the Churchill Steeplechase enabling the Wellington Guineas to be transferred to fill the vacancy. In two instances increases have been made in the stake--money offered on the opening day, the Shorts Handicap having been Increased from £SOO to £6OO, and an additional £SO has been attached to the Walnul Handicap. Stakes Increased Previously, the Haroourt Stakes was on the third day of the spring meeting, but prevision has been made for it to be staged third on the second day this year, The stake money has been increased from £SOO to £750. A further £IOO has been added to the Karltane Handicap, the two-year-old event, and the Pearce Handicap, one mile, which replaces the Watkins Handicap, 11 furlongs, has been made a £IOOO race. The Awatea Handicap, the concluding event, has been made a seven furlong contest, and the stake has been lifted to £6OO. In all the club is offering £8530 in stake money for the two days, AUSTRALIAN RACING SHINING NIGHT WINS CHELMSFORD STAKES SYDNEY, September 18. Crowds deafcnlngly cheered when His Majesty’s filly Sun Chariot easily defeated the favourite, Watling Street, in the St. Leger at Newmarket, achieving a remarkable record for the Royal colours which had never previously won four classic races in one season. The five classic races in the English racing calendar are the Derby, the Oaks, the 1000 Guineas, the 2000 Guineas, and the St. Leger. Sun Chariot, a three-year-old filly by Hyperion—Clarence, held an unbeaten record of four starts and four wins as a two-ycar-old, and this year has won the 1000 Guineas, the Oaks, and the St. Leger. Big Game, also owned by His Majesty, won the 2000 Guineas. Sun Chariot would probably be ridden by Gordon Richards, England’s best-known jockey. Watling Street, who finished second to Sun Chariot, won the Derby, defeating the King’s horse, Big Game.

TROTTING NOTES

Consistency Consistency was a feature of the racing at Trentham on Saturday, and three horses—Brungasta, Free Bond, and Glen* arrlf—who had filled minor places in their first starts won later In the day. Great Deceiver Great Deceiver, whose form for a long time had not been very encouraging, * now showing the that « earning his owner a fair share or tne prize-money. In nine starts last season, a second place was his only reward. R[e started the present season with a second to communique at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting, and at the Forbury Park patriotic meeting he won the Navy Han* dlcap Impressively. His first and second at Trentham suggests that he may be heard of again next Saturday. Great Deceiver is a six-year-old gelding by Acron, a brilliant racehorse with a mile record of 2mln 3 2-ssec, who has left few approaching his own standard. The dam l* Harebell Direct, 2mln 17sec. a mare brought from Australia by J. J. Kennerley R. Townley, the trainer of Great Deceiver, received injuries to his back and shoulder when Pleasant Guy fell with him at the recent meeting at Addington. and the effects are still bad enough to prevent him from driving in races. On Saturday F. G. Holmes drove Great Deceiver In both his races. Trained at Ashhurst Lady Tornado, winner of the United Nations Handicap on Saturday, is a four-year-old filly by Wrack’s Star from Storm Queen, and is trained at Ashhurst by J. A. Gerrard. Last season she started In seven races, and although she failed to win she was twice second at the Manawatu meeting in April. She won very easily and on a heavy track her time of 3min 2sec for a mile and a quarter represented a fair effort. An Improver Racing is evidently improving Free Bend, for In her last four starts she has finished first twice, second once, and third once. By Red Shadow Brungasta, who finished second to Lady Tornado in the United Nations Handicap at Trentham and later won the Air Force Handicap, has done little racing In the last two seasons, but he is now six years old and apparently improving. Trained by L. F. Berkett at Nelson. Brungasta is by a fine racehorse in Bed Shadow, from Nell Bingen, Back to Form Glenarrif gave a glimpse of his true form at the Wellington meeting on Saturday, and his first and second will in a measure recoup his owner, Mr W. T. Lowe, for several disappointments, Glenarriff has great speed, but in his races he has met with more than a fair share of bad luck.
