SUBMARINE OFF BARBADOS

TORPEDOES FIRED AT SHIPPING BRIDGETOWN (Barbados), Sept. 12. An Axis submarine entered Carlisle Bay and fired five torpedoes at shipping in the harbour. This is the first attack of the war in the islands. Shore batteries and machine-guns replied but the submarine remained in the bay for 20 minutes, torpedoeing at five-minute intervals. Officials declare that there were no casualties but they did not mention damage. Hundreds of persons rushed to the waterfront and saw great columns of water rising from the sea as the torpedoes exploded.
