COAL STRIKE IK WAIKATO
MEN ADVISED TO RETURN RESULT OF SECRET BALLOT (PA.) AUCKLAND 1 ; September 13. The result of the secret ballot held throughout the Waikato coalfield on the issue of whether the miners, who have been on strike for more than a week, should resume work pending settlement of the present dispute, has been announced. A proposal for a continuation of the strike failed to secure the required majority, and members of the Northern Miners’ Union have been advised to resume work on Monday when all the mines will be open and executive members of the union will give a report. ' , . „ The strike began on September when 190 miners at the Pukemiro colliery stopped work because of a dispute over the claim of 10 men to deficiency payment amounting to between £ls and £2O. The Pukemiro men were joined in a sympathy strike by the employees of the Renown, Glen Afton, Macdonald, Rotowaro, and Wilton mines, by September 9 approximately 1300 men were on strike. POSITION OF RAIL SERVICES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 12. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) states that it is not intended to impose restrictions on railway services on Monday as originally proposed, but if the strike continues they will have to be imposed on Tuesday. ________________
