CATCHMENT BOARD

FAVOURABLE REPORT ON PROPOSAL

A favourable repbrt had been received from a committee of the Canterbury Progress League on the proposal initiated by the council for the formation of a catchment board to control river and drainage works in the Lake Ellesmere catchment area, the- chairman' of the Springs County Council (Cn J, S. Simpson) at the monthly meeting of the council. The cnairman added that the Dominion council set up under the act was now functioning, an engineer had been appointed, and there would be a meeting shortly at which proposals from other parts of the South Island, similar to the one made by the Springs Council, would be considered. He understood that in any plan the provision of a permanent outlet for Lake Ellesmere would be a primary object, and was hopeful that by the end of the war it would be possible to put a scheme into operation.
