MUNICIPAL ELECTRICITY DEPARTMENT

Sir,—Councillor M. E. Lyons is perfectly in order when he says that the public of Christchurch should be proud of the Municipal Electricity Department, but they should not be so proud of being able to report a profit of £39,107. The writer would ask him and his committee seriously to consider reducing this surplus to. say £19,000 by considering the claims of the com' mercial user. Why the domestic user should <?et current for less than half the rate charged the commercial user is hard to follow; then the industrial charge is still rather less than half that charged to commercial interests. It has to be remembered that the commercial interests made it possible to bring the current into Christchurch in the first place. Industrial use in the beginning was small, and domestic use did not exist. There is another danger in making big net profits and that is it gives the Public Works Department another opportunity to come in and collar the profit by increasing their charges for current.—Yours, etc., COMMERCE.
