FARM LABOUR FOR SOUTHLAND
CONFERENCE ARRANGED (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 11. A serious shortage of labour for urgent farm work in Southland resulting from the Army’s refusal to release adult fit men from camp was discussed at a meeting of the Southland Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day. Mr A. L. Adamson (secretary) said the position had become very serious. Mr D. H. O’Brien: There is a great surjflus of Ministers of the Crown. It might be possible to get some of them out-to help with the work. Mr E. A. Cameron said the northern provinces, whose cropping work started earliest, had secured leave for so many soldiers that the Army had stopped further leave of adult fit men. Southland was last in the line of production and was being unduly penalised. He had been in touch with the Hon. Adam Hamilton, who had arranged an immediate conference between the Director of National Service (Mr J. S. Hunter) and the Army authorities. It was decided to support the efforts of the Southland Council of Primary Production to secure sufficient labour for urgent spring work and to request particularly that ill shearers, irrespective of grade, be released for the coming season.
