ADULT ENGINEER TRAINEES
* SUCCESS OF AUXILIARY SCHEME A report on the progress of the auxiliary engineers’ training courses at the Technical College was made by Dr. D. E. Hansen (principal) at a meeting of the Christchurch Technical College Board last evening. Many of the men in the course are soldiers returned from the present war. “The placement of trainees in the auxiliary engineering classes is proceeding very satisfactorily,” Dr. Hansen said, “Of the 13 who finished their course of 16 weeks, 12 have gone to positions and the remaining man has a position to go to. Eleven others have several weeks still to elapse before their course is completed, but three of these have been offered positions already. It is hoped that we shall soon be able to select enough new men to bring the class up to its full numbers.” The question of following the careers of the men trained in these classes was raised by Mr A. G. Williams, who suggested that the training might be of real and lasting value, but it was necessary to follow up the various cases to find out if the work was satisfactory. Dr. Hansen: Officers of the State Placement Department (now absorbed by the National Service Department) do keep in touch with these men. Of the 60 men we trained last year, only one or two were not found completely satisfactory by their employers. In fact, from some of the wages I know some are drawing, they must be very highly satisfactory. We have reason to be pleased indeed with the results of the course.
