SCOUTS IN WAR WORK
PLACE IN NATIONAL LIFE (P.S.S.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. “The conclusion of the thirty-fourth year in the history of the scout movement in New Zealand presents a condition in which much has been accomplished, important, indeed vital, in the present crisis in the development of world relationships; but it also presents a field in which more needs to be don'e, calling for greater effort on the part of those who are in the scout movement and the recruiting of many more workers,” stated the annual report of the Boy Scouts’ Association. “The war period has proved to be a time of opportunity for the scouts of former years, and it is gratifying to have such concrete evidence as has been given in various ways that not only has the scout movement produced men who are now serving the Dominion well and truly, but also that these men have acknowledged that they have been inspired to go forward to battle by the ideals and by the training \ that they received in scouting. f “War conditions, however, have created difficulties for the movement. It has been robbed of its leaders because commissioners and scouters and the men who are the natural leaders of the scout movement are the first to be called upon for military duties. Some leaders have been carrying on their military duties and in so far as they can do so, have kept going with their scout work. This involves great personal sacrifice on their part and should inspire others to come forward and to take their places and for us who are left to serve the movement to go forward with added zeal to do the work which lies before us.”
