Rexfe Walter Post, a soldier, aged 21 years, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour. An order for the return of the bicycle to (ts owner was made. REMANDED Harold Maurice James Smlthef, a linotype operator and airrnam 24 years of age, was remanded to appear on September 13 on a charge of stealing a bicycle valued at; £8 10s. the property of Frederick Cecil Benger. Ball was fixed at £SO and one surety of £6O. Sidney Travers, an able seaman, £» years of age, pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a bicycle valued at £4. the property of Arthur Edward Gladstone, and a bicycle valued at £lO the property of Donald Alfred Brown, the accused was ordered to tome up for sentence If called on within three years. He was ordered to be handed , over to the military authorities and to make restitution of the sum of £l4. MILK BELOW STANDARD Charged with selling milk not up to the required standard, Arthur George Martin, a storekeeper, was fined 20s. MILITARY DEFAULTER John William Meager, for failing to report for military service, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour to be followed by defaulters’ detention. TRANSFER OF FIREARM Thomas Richard Sadler, n labourer, was fined- 10s and ordered to pay costs for delivering a firearm without first having obtained a permit. A DOMESTICATED COCKATOO Cyril Clarence Goodwin, an engineer, pleaded not guilty to a charge of importing to New Zealand a cockatoo without having,a permit to do so. Mr C. S. Thomas, who appeared for Goodwin, said the facts put forward by the police were admitted, but he submitted that a permit was not required as the bird was domesticated and not wild. For a domesticated animal or bird the permit was not, required. Mr Thomas said this bird was domesticated if evei one was It was one of the family, had the free run of the house, had its meat and vegetables at the table with the rest of the family, and drank from a cup which it lifted with Its foot. Goodwin had secured the bird in 1931 when it was four weeks old. The Magistrate upheld the contention of Mr Thomas, and dismissed the case. LONG LIST OF THEFTS Henry Herbert Pearce, a carpenter, aged 38 years, pleaded guilty to 20 different charges of stealing goods of a total value of £304 15s 9d. The thefts committed were as follows; One roll roofing papers, valued at 21s. the property oi Ronald Leslie Sparrow; a boy’s cycle valued at £5, the property cl Ronald William Weaver: one case of nails valued at £3 9s, the property of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd.; two gallons of turpentine valued at Bs, the property of W. A. Poison: one Iron Stanley plane valued £2 Is 6d, the property of Charles John Rawlings; 15 sheets of three-ply timber, valued at £5 12s 6d, the property of Chas. S. Luney; two tins of paint valued at £2 2s, the property of Ewart Smith, Ltd.; goods to the value of £24 2s from Victor Camden Constant; one overcoat valued £6, the property of James Nelson; one doctor's case and surgical instruments valued £2O, the property of James Herbert Fahey; seven sets of tools and nails valued £5 8s 3d, the property of Ewart Smith; electric motor, electric pump, and spray gun, valued, £9. the property of James Ludlow Palmer; one radio valued £l9 19s, the property of Charles Kinred Quirk; one vacuum cleaner valued £l2 12s, the property of Elsie Clarissa Hall; three golf bags and 13 golf clubs, valued £4, the property of Joseph William McCabe; one .303 rifle and Mauser rifle valued £l3, the property of ,W. H. Tlsdall, Ltd.; various articles valued £145 18s. the property of George Raymond Sherratt and WHhelmina Boon Sherratt: goods valued £lO 6s 6d, the property of Ethel Gibson and others; and goods valued £l4 14s. the property of Myrtle Emma Humm A charge of breaking and entering the residence of Johanna Wlnterlngham was withdrawn, and a charge of theft from a dwelling substituted. On the 12 indictable charges accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, and on the summary charges he was convicted and remanded for sentence sine die. INDECENT ASSAULT Edward Peter Helsdon, an engineer, aged 60 years, pleaded guilty to two charges of indecently assaulting a male. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was fixed at £IOO with one surety of £IOO.
