The Canterbury branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has received advice from the Christchurch City Council that its request for a grant toward the cost of picking up injured animals from the city streets has been declined. At us last meeting the branch decided to make another application for assistatThe clinic committee reported that the animal clinic had been reopened in Victoria street. The branch decided to suggest to. trotting clubs that a veterinary first-aid outfit be kept at the Addington racecourse. An allegation that in a race of more than three miles at a recent meeting at Riccarton horses had been whipped unnecessarily between the last hurdle and the winning post was made bv a member. Concern at “unwarranted punishment” of racehorses was expressed.
