MANPOWER IN AUSTRALIA
(Rec. 11 p.m.) CANBERRA, Sept. 9. By the end of this year Australia will have 1,600,000 men, or 60 per cent, of its estimated total male population of 2.250.000, either in the fighting forces or engaged in war work. By the same date the Government expects to have about 1,800,000 out of the 5.000,000 Australians between the ages of 14 and 65 engaged in full-time war work. This represents 30 per cent, of the total population of Australia. Before the war 540,000 men and women were employed in factories supplying civil needs. By the end of June, 1942. this figure had been reduced to 200,000, a reduction of 63 per cent. From 1300, the numbei of women engaged in war work has increased to 125.000. It is proposed to increase this total to 200.000 by December, Canadian Casualties at Dieppe.— The Canadian Army has issued its twentythird casualty list since the Dieppe raid, making a total of 917 casualties believed to be attributable to the Dieppe raid. The Army has reported 1073 killed and missing since the beginning of the war. —Ottawa, August 9- ‘
