MINERS TO BE PROSECUTED
STRIKE CHARGES LAID The refusal of Waikato miners to continue work has led to the service of summonses on the men charging them with breaches of the Emergency Regulations. The Government decided on Tuesday to authorise the issue of the summonses, and the men are called to appear in the Magistrate’s Court at Huntly on September 17, the first available day for a sitting by a magistrate. Although action has been taken by the Government, further steps have been taken by the United Mine Workers’ Federation to settle the dispute, and the men will probably be met to-day by officials of the federation and a representative of the Government. A Press Association message from Hamilton yesterday said; “The Pukemiro, Renown, Glen Afton, Macdonald, Rotowaro and Alison coal mines were idle again to-day. The men stayed in Huntly this morning and decided at a mass meeting that they would remain out until the dispute was settled. “It was reported in Huntly that this decision means that a strike has been declared, officially. It is understood that a conference is to be held in Auckland on Friday, when further efforts will be made to reach a settlements “The men at the Wilton Colliery, which up till to-day had continued to work, decided at a brief stop-wqrk meeting at the pithead this morning to strike in sympathy with the other affected areas. “Some 155 men are involved at the Wilton mine, which is situated at Glen Massey.” .
