VICHY PERSECUTION OF JEWS
♦ RESISTANCE RISING IN FRANCE ■ , LONDON, Sept. 8.; “ M, Laval has dismissed General 'de St. Vincent, who was military governor of Lyons. French quarters in London say that General de St. Vincent refused to order troops to arrest Jews. Tension is rising throughout France as a result of Vichy’s anti-Jewish measures. Noisy demonstrations have occurred in Lyons in the last 10 days, resulting in clashes with the police. Many arrests were made. Roman Catholics have declared open war on Vichy as a result of M. Laval’s order for the arrest of priests sheltering Jewish children. Cardinal Gerlier, Archbishop of Lyons, and other Roman Catholic leaders have refused to authorise the surrender of children, and episcopal letters recommending every help, for persecuted Jews are being read throughout unoccupied France. A heavy explosion .occurred to-day at the French naval base at Toulon. The Paris radio said that railway traffic at Toulon was interrupted.
