BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY At the monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Lyttelton branch of the British Sailors’ Society, the Christchurch guild applied for permission to form a junior ladies’ guild, similar to that at Lyttelton. This was granted', and the guild was Qongratu-
dated on the step taken. The Sumner guild reported i membership of 62 and that good work was being done for the seamen, especially in the knitting of garments. The Opawa guild.’reported that since the knitting circle had been formed; £4O had been spent on wool and 150 garments made. The missioner’s report stated that during the month 842 seamen had visited the Seamen’s Institute. 10 social functions and four religious services had been held and 497 woollen garments and 211
books and magazines had been distributed. “ . Fire In Boot Only slight damage was caused by a fire, which broke out in the roof of a shop and dwelling in Canterbury street last evening. The fire brigade was called out and the outbreak was extinguished with a few buckets of water. The building is owned by Mr A. D. Hamilton and occupied by Mr E. Frame.
