The Minister of Transport and Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) discussed problems with the South Island zoning officer (Mr T. H. Langford) yesterday and will return to Wellington to-day. The Minister of Labour and Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb) was engaged on departmental business in Christchurch yesterday. He will return today to Wellington. Mr A. A. Besley has been appointed Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages and Registrar of Electors at Christchurch in succession to Mr J. J. McGahey, who died some months ago. Mr Besley at present is registrar at Dunedin.

Mr J. Acland, M.P., left yesterday Tor the North Island.

Captain C. J. Holsey, Canterbury Regiment, has been appointed to the New Zealand Temporary Staff. Regret at the death of Mr George Hitchens, an employee of the City Council for many years, and the first employee of the council to retire on superannuation, was expressed by the council last evening. A son, Mr L. N. Hitchens, is the council’s committee clerk.

Flying Officer Andrew Frederick Tye, who was recently awarded the D.F.C., was well known in Christchurch. He was educated at the Otago Boys’High School and enlisted in the Air Force in 1939. The citation states: “He has completed operational flying tasks, often in bad weather. He is a skilful and fearless pilot, who three times attacked U-bbats in a determined man. ner, and once made a successful night landing from an operational flight after one engine had ceased to function.”

Driver Louis Longuet, aged 25, the only son of Mr and Mrs L. P. Longuet, Grafton street, Sumper, died recently following an operation af Wellington. He.was given.a funeral with full military honours. Driver Longuet was born at Sumner and educated at the Sumner District High School. Lieutenant C. S. Pepper, M.C., a former All Black footballer, has been promoted to the temporary rank of captain in the New Zealand Temporary Staff. Captain Pepper won the Military Cross in the Libyan fighting last year.
