Brigadier-General P. J. Hurley, United States Minister to New Zealand, arrived by air from the north yesterday. He was met at the aerodrome by Wing Commander K. L. Caldwell, Brigadier E. T. Rowllings (Officer Commanding the Southern Military District), Major A. H. Thomas, the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), and the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast). Briga-dier-General Hurley, accompanied by Colonel J. H. Nankivell (United States Military Attache), and others, was later taken by the Mayor and Mr Feast on a brief tour of city areas. To-day he will be guest of honour at a private luncheon given by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. During the morning and afternoon he will inspect defence areas. Mr W. G. Spencer has been appointed to be the producers’ representative on the New Zealand Poultry Board in place of Mr A. E. Knowles—(P.A.) Mr F. G. Oborn has been appointed Deputy-Commissioner of Taxes, says the latest Gazette.—(P.A.)
