PATRIOTIC FUND SECRETARY
NEED FOR APPOINTMENT DISCUSSED
“Until now we have been proud of running this fund without paying any salaries, but we have been able to do that only through the generosity of Mr Feast and Mr Niven and other voluntary workers,” said Mr D. C. McKechnie (Geraldine), commenting on the announcement at the monthly meeting yesterday that an organising secretary would shortly be sought by public advertisement for the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council. _ “I think that we should be willing to spend money to get a good man with high qualifications,” Mr McKechnie continued. “There was an impression in my zone that the council thought of getting a cheap man, and the feeling was that this was definitely a mistake. There is really a need for a full-time organiser, and it would be worth paying him £SOO a year to whip up our work. If we paid this it would be only j per cent, of our quota, and if it meant that we raised our quota more quickly, it would be well worth it. We should not be satisfied to employ a retired man at a small salary” Mr E. H. Andrews (chairman); There was a very definite agreement that no sacrifice in qualifications was to be made for the sake of a lower salary. If it happens that a retired man has the necessary qualifications, then that man would have as good a chance of getting the job as another man with the qualifications. Mr H. S. Feast: One of the chief qualifications demanded is proved organising ability. Mr H. C. Townsend; The presence of an organising secretary for the fund would be an advantage to the individual zones and to the provincial council. Mr Feast; The position will probably be advertised in a few day*, i
