MAGISTRATE'S COURT

WEDNESDAY (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.M.) REMANDED

On a charge of stealing £7 from Robert Carr, at Greymouth, on June 11, William James Davis, a soldier, was remanded until to-day. (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) NOXIOUS WEEDS CHARGE

H. H. Cook was charged with failing to clear noxious weeds from a section at Clifton, Sumner. Mr E. A. Clelahd, who appeared for the Sumner Borough Council, said that this was a case adjourned from a previous sitting of the Court. In the meantime (a period of two months) nothing had been done to rid the section of noxious weeds. At the previous hearing it was estimated that £2O would cover the cost of clearing the section, but inquiries since showed that the price would be £9O. Evidence was given by George Ipdwin Harper, Inspector of Noxious Weeds. Cook, in evidence, said he could have the work done for less than £2O and asked for two months in which to have it done.

The Magistrate: What is the use of coming here and saying what you could do the work for? Why haven’t you done it? I do not want to fine you heavily, hut something must be done. There is a heavy fine waiting for you if nothing is done. I take you at your word. You will be given until August 26.
