MONEY STOLEN
FREEZING WORKER PLACED ON PROBATION (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 10. Pleading guilty to three charges of theft of money totalling £BB, Gerald Frank Gilbert Smith, aged 56, a labourer, employed at the Southdown Freezing Works, was placed on probation for two years and ordered to make full restitution at the rate of 10s a week, and to take out a prohibition order. ' ; The police said that Smith was a delegate to the Freezing Workers’ Union, and;was issued with books of membership tickets valued at £1 each, and was entitled to receive 10 per cent, of the money accounted for. An iifyestigation showed that, for two years he had systematically practised dishbiv esty. He told the police that some Of the money had been spent on his family and aome on liquor. ; Defending counsel said that Smith was separated from his wife, and had considerable deniands on his earnings. JHIls fellow-workers had collected £25 towards restitution.
