MOUNT PLEASANT RIDING

♦ ■' , , PROPOSAL TO AMALGAMATE WITH CITY The proposal to amalgamate the Mount Pleasant riding of Heathcote County with the city is to be reported upon by a commission of inquiry, which will be appointed, according to advice received by the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) yesterday morning from the Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs (Mr J. W. Heenan). ’The Heathcote County Council and a number of ratepayers had lodged objections to the proposal, Mr Heenan said, .and it was therefore proposed to set up a commission to report on the matter. The commission would comprise a magistrate, the, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the land district, and a district valuer under the Valuation of Land, Act. Costs would be borne by the parties to the inquiry in such proportion as the commission decided. Further advice would be given when the commission was constituted. The movement to amalgamate Mourn Pleasant with the city came to a head recently when a large section of the ratepayers in the riding signed a petition in favour •of amalgamation anc forwarded it to the Department of Internal Affairs.
