REPERTORY SOCIETY

ONE-ACT PLAYS Because several of the’ performers were on duty during the black-out last evening, the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society’s presentation of oneact plays at the Jellicoe Hall was half-an-hour late in starting, but once the curtain was up, it went with a swing. An unusually large number of the players were making their first public appearance with the society. The first play, a comedy, produced by Nonie Enright, was presented by Miss Margaret Inwood, Mrs Muriel Cochrane, Miss Doris Stephens, Miss Barbara Gudgeon, Mrs Patricia Hill, Miss Norah Stapp, and Mr Charles Hobbs. Misses Evelyn le Page, Patricia Whitta, Edna Neville, and Mr Jack Henderson, directed by Miss Jean Heath, presented a play of more fanciful type, and greater variety was introduced in the final intensely dramatic play, in which the cast included Mr S. L. Jones, Miss Mavis Barter, Miss Frona King, and Mr T. W. C. Tothill. The dance was arranged by Miss Peggy Holmes, and the producer was Mr Claude Davies. The whole production was directed by Miss Marjorie Bassett and Mr C. A. Inglis was stage manager.

TE WAI POUNAMU COUNCIL

His Grace Archbishop West-Watson presided at the annual meeting of the council of the Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College, yesterday, when a most satisfactory year’s work was reported. Officers were elected as follows: Chairman, the Rev. J. T. McWilliam; council members, Miss T. West-Watson, Mrs T. E. Chisnall, Miss A. I. Foley, Mrs L. Clark, Mrs K. A. Gough, Mrs H. C. Hewland, Canon G. Nelham Watson, the Rev. T. Williams, Mr John Stewart, and Mr J. E. M. Rountree; honorary member, Mrs H. J. Marriner; honorary treasurer, Mr A. Hunr.ibell; honorary secretary, Mr John Stewart; chaplain, the Rev. J. T. McWilliam.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

CANTERBURY FEDERATION Mrs M. Morten, president of the Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes, congratulated delegates representing 30 institutes in Canterbury on their remarkable year’s war work, when speaking at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Federation, held all day yesterday at the Young Women’s Christian Association rooms. She urged members to carry on the worth-while work of the Institute movement, which meant helping one another. The report showed that the making of sheepskin jackets, organised by Mrs W. Deans, for men on minesweepers had been a special feature of institute work. Other war work done Included knitting and sewing for men in the services, for prisoners of war, the Lady Galway Guild, Patriotic Council, Dr. Barnardo's homes and others, as well as packing parcels for soldiers, serving teas at the Welcome Club, and taking part in the drives for waste metal and paper. Many members had made gloves and slippers from scraps left over from sheepskin jackets. Interest had been maintained in the drama, arts and crafts, and gardening circles, said the report. Mrs J. Prebble gave a report on the Women’s Institute helper scheme. A light luncheon was served by Mrs McCree and helpers. An.instructive talk was given by Nurse Atrey, of the Department of Health. Officers were elected as follows:—President: Mrs Morten; vice-presidents, Mrs Prebble and Miss V. Bowie; committee: Mesdames J. M. Shelley, P. Birdling, S. Candy, Prebble, G. A. Hammond, Mc-' Cree, Ware, Misses Bowis and Doak.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION

STYX A novel competition, named “Representing a Song,” caused much amusement at the seventh birthday party of the Styx branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs Johnston welcomed some 200 guests, and handed posies to presidents of sister branches. Members of the Styx Drama Club presented a play and items were given by Mesdames Scott and Wheeler (songs), and Mis., Audrey Eady (recitations). Afternoon tea was served and Mrs Colin Mclntosh, provincial vice-presi-dent, cut the birthday cake.
