The engagement is announced between Rose Elizabeth, second daughter of Mr and Mrs W. H. Denley, of Ashburton, and Kenneth Watson, eldest son of Mr and Mrs K. R. Orchiston, of Beaumont, Otago. The engagement is announced of Margaret, elder daughter of Mr and the late Mrs C. L. Lane, of Miramar, Wellington, to John Richard Woodward (overseas), only son of Mr and Mrs L. A. Woodward, Christchurch.
The engagement is announced of Shirley, only daughter of Dr. and Mrs A, W. Owen-Johnston, 11 Wellesley avenue, Invercargill, and Second-Lieu-tenant Douglas David Lyness, N.Z.M.C., second son of Mr and Mrs J. R. Lyness, “Strathbrae.” Kerikeri, Bay of Islands. RED CROSS SOCIETY KIRWEE Capes for voluntary aids, 205 articles for hbspital use. and 134 articles for civilians injured by enemy action, had been supplied by members during the year, said the report presented at the annual meeting of the Kirwee subcentre of the Red Cross Society. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs F. Johnson; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Selby, Weir, and McMeekan; secretary, Mrs H. J. Devonshire; assistant-secretary, Miss M. Kennedy; treasurer, Mrs G. Batstone; auditor, Mr E. Wilde; committee, Mesdames Burleigh, Coffey, D. Smith, Harrison. Moffat, Begg, and Kennedy. STYX-HAREWOOD It was reported at the annual meeting of the Styx-Harewood sub-centre of the Red Cross Society that much patriotic work had been done during the year. Mrs F. McArthur presided over a good attendance. Posies were presented to Mesdames McArthur, D. McConnel, W. Nunweek, and to Mrs Burrell, of the Papanui subcentre of the Red Cross Society. Mrs Haytcn presented Mrs McArthur with a gift from members. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs F. McArthur; vice-pre-sidents, Mesdames Merton, sen., W. Henderson, and L. C. Sisson; secretary and treasurer, Mrs D. McConnel; assistant secretary, Mrs R. K. Merton; committee, Mesdames Saunders, Hayton, Jones. Montgomery, Winfield, Cummings; Hardy, Whitcombe, Frazer, and Stoddart. WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION CHRISTCHURCH Miss C. Henderson presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. A temperance fact was read and a letter of greetings was sent to Mrs Judkins, who recently celebrated her ninetieth birthday. Miss Elsie Andrews, Dominion Organiser, gave a talk.
